Welcome Ryan Joseph Nguyen

Welcome Baby Ryan Joseph Nguyen, born at 2:28pm on Tuesday June 7th, 2011, weighing in a healthy 7.10 pounds and 19.5 inches tall!

Now for the scoop of how this all happened:

The game plan for the second pregnancy was the same as the first, a Natural Birth without any drugs. Yes, my wife is crazy!

So before we went to bed on Sunday June 5th, I ended up jinxing myself by telling Angel I was so tired from a long day of surfing at the beach and would appreciate it if she could have the baby any other day but today. Especially because we have not packed and I was gonna do it the next day. What happens... at about 11:53pm Angel wakes up and I look over and say, "whats wrong babe"? She is in a daze herself and says, "I think my water broke". She got up and I looked over on her side, and I was like whoa, her water did break! Angel quickly waddles to the shower and cleans herself up while I get on the phone to relay the info to the doctors office. They told us to come in because of the possibility of infection since her water broke.

At this point I tried to be as calm as I can for Angel, meanwhile in the back of my mind I'm going crazy because we have not prepared our bags, there is a crime scene trail from our bed to the shower, and we have a sleeping toddler in bed. I quickly call up my brother Bao that lives right down the street to come over to watch Taylor through the night. I then ran around the house franticly packing our bag and cleaning up Angel's amnionic fluid. My brother came over within 10 minutes and we were off.

We checked in the hospital at 12:47am Monday June 6th. Nurse Kimberly confirmed that Angel's contractions are about 8 to 12 minutes apart. She was dilated at a 2 last Monday. The doctor did not want to check her at this point because they did not want to expose her to any possible infections. Dr. Franklin was first doctor on scene. She ran the ultrasound, and confirmed that our baby's head is facing down and he had a normal heart rate.

This would seem to be good news to the average women delivering a baby, but because Angel chose to go natural, we knew this is not good. Angel did not want to get induced and with contractions at 8 to 12 minutes apart, we knew that this could be a long day.

At 7:04am, Nurse Kristy relieves our receiving Nurse Kimberly. Our OB Dr. May arrives at 7:14am and tells us we maybe looking at a 11pm delivery with the rate we are going. We started to get irritated because Dr. May was insinuating that we should change our game plan and start on pitocin and get an epidural because he is off at 6pm and he would like to deliver the baby before Dr. Winters relieves him. He then left us on a ridiculous note saying, "Not all natural births are natural". We were irked and started to hope that he doesn't deliver our baby.

It is now 7:30am, and I go get breakfast down at the cafeteria. Angel tells me to sneak her some food. The nurse and docs says it is not recommended because she could aspirate the food if we go into a C-section. So I listen to the docs, while Angel throws daggers with her eyes. It is now 2:57pm, and Angel gets more persistent at getting some food. We temporarily relieve her hunger with some hospital broth that the nurse says she can have. That did not do the trick, so at 3:20pm, Angel tells me to leave the room while she sneaks some bites of my leftover subway sandwich.

Dr. May comes back at 3:25pm to check up on us. He reiterates that he will be out at 6pm and back at 7am to 11am Tuesday. He then suggests we wait till morning to have the baby so he can be there for it.

We go for a walk at 6:27pm. Angel is attached to a lojack, so the nurses can monitor the baby's heart rate. We ended up going off radar unintentionally. Nurses were scurrying franticly looking for us and gave us a scolding when they found us outside getting fresh air. The nurse told us to walk in a rectangle, but never specified how big of a rectangle we had ;)

At 7:06pm, Nurse Erica is on shift. Dr. Winters comes in at 7:15pm and suggests a prostaglandin suppository to help ripen and soften a birth area and to kickstart it. We declined, and stuck to our plan. At 9pm, Angel contractions still real far apart, and we start to consider pitosin.

It is now 11pm and Angel is still having contractions far apart, so we tell the nurse to start her on the PIT (pitosin). We both decided that the most important thing is the baby's health, and we couldn't go over 24 hours with the water broken, otherwise we risk infection to our boy. So inducing the labor was the next best plan, but we still went with out the epidural. Although, Angel has considered it several times.

Jack Johnson and Enya still playing seven hours later at about 6:21am the next day June 7th, Angel is wondering how far dilated she is to gauge how much longer she has to go? Nurse Theresa checks, and says she is at 4cm. Angel gets so discouraged now after hearing that. (She needed to be at 10cm to push). Another hour rolls by and another nurse relieves us, and now we have Nurse Terry. Dr. May comes in at 10:37am and checks Angel again, and says she is at a 6cm dilation. Still discouraging news. Dr. Elizabeth Johnson is on scene at 1:06pm and checks Angel again, she is at a 7, and says the head is high and there seems to be a bag pocket stuck in there. Doc says Angel's water somehow re-sealed itself, and wants to break it with Angel's permission. Angel agrees to get it done. Doc says the cervics is real soft, and it should not be long. At 1:47pm Nurse Misty comes to break Nurse Terry for lunch. Angel at this point is going through very painful contractions and feels like she has to go. Angel see's Nurse Terry in hall way, and asks her to comeback because she feels she is ready. Nurse Terry agrees and prepares the room for delivery.

Angel is secretly pushing at this point while our Nurse is preparing the room. Angel was thinking at this point that since I was by her side, I could grab the baby if anything happened. I am helping her breathe at this point and giving her positive reinforcement. The nurse calls in Dr. Johnson and Angel is up in the birthing position.

Dr. Johnson checks her again, and says she is at a 9.5cm dilation, and decides that she is gonna have to push her way out to a 10. The doc then says alright, give me a hard push for the first one. Angel breathes, and pushes. Doc then says, on the second one, hold your legs up and push. Angel gives a good push, and Doc yells stop! The umbilical chord was wrapped around our boy, so the Doc unwraps it. Then the Doc says, ok listen, on the 3rd push give me half the amount of the second push. Angel did not hear the instructions, and continues to give a hard push! I'm looking over and see my baby boy literally shooting out of Angel like a scene from a movie. The doc and nurse are moving in slow motion and catches the baby at the last second about an inch from the ground!

I proceeded to cut the umbilical chord and it sinks in, we have a son!

Oh Baby

So we decided it was time to give Taylor a playmate, and bam, just like that, Angel is prego again! We had our second ultrasound today and the heartbeat is still going strong. Angel is at 11 weeks, and our expected due date is June 6th, 2011!

After some heavy convincing, I got Angel to agree to let us find out the sex this time around. Unfortunately, we are going to have to wait for another 6-9 weeks.

The big question we've been hearing these days are, "What do you want this time, boy or girl?". Angel and I have similar answers. We don't mind if its a girl, because Taylor will have a little sister to be buddies with, and only be 3 years apart. If its a boy, we get to have a rich man's family and the veto power will be shifted when deciding between watching sports or some chick flick.

As for the pregnancy so far, Angel has been real sick. If you were expecting a phone call from her, forget about it. She has been curled up in the fetal position, just praying for the first trimester to end soon. She was sick with Taylor too, but I think it is A LOT worse this time around. Morning sickness is more like ALL day and night sickness. She has tried every remedy in the book; balance wrist bands, ginger, medicine, crackers, 7up, fresh air, and so on. If you have a cure, PLEASE share!
